Description
Colonizing the Australian continent by nations other than Great Britain is one of the well-discussed alternate history topics, especially if it involved countries like the Netherlands, Portugal and France.
In this case, the PoD was decades to half-a-century earlier than 1788, where the French explorers accidentally discovered the coast of OTL Western Australia, particularly near the OTL location of Perth. No matter what the PoD, the French government would send mostly male explorers, as well as prisoners from all over France, to the new colony, mostly intermarried with indigenous Australian women and formed families; immigrant families from France (and other Francophone countries as well) were not accepted until the 1820s, almost a decade after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
The name of Western Australia in this scenario would be Nouvelle-Hollande, as in New Holland.
For the flag itself, I used the OTL Western Australian colors (gold and black) as inspiration, and I added the Southern Cross in upper left corner, and swan in the center to symbolize the country itself.
Created and edited in both MS Paint and Photoscape.
NOTE:
- The swan was originally part of Western Australian state heraldic badge
