Description
Personally and honestly, the Principality of Monaco deserved a larger territory, and I really mean it: the whole French départment of Alpes-Maritimes; after all, the city of Nice is relatively near from the whole Principality, and in fact the latter could be considered as part of Niçard Metropolitan Area. Oh, and Cannes with its famous international film festival.
Weeks ago, I recently found out in Mad for Monaco blog that Monaco was part of the Guelph-Ghibelline saga that marked much of the medieval history of northern and central Italy; Monaco was a Ghibelline garrison before it was seized by the Grimaldis, who were Guelph supporters. It took quite some time, as the blog indicated, before the Grimaldis permanently ruled Monaco.
Honestly, the OTL Monegasque flag with its basic red-and-white bicolor, could be easily be confused with other countries, particularly with the likes of Singapore and Indonesia, so it's relatively necessary to create and alternate flag of the Principality; to pay tribute and acknowledge its medieval past, the Guelph (red cross on white) and Ghibelline (white cross on red flag) banners are combined. At the center is the lesser variant of the Monegasque coat of arms (elements courtesy of Mathieu CHAINE and Glasshouse).
